Things are coming along!
I had just come back from the gym and was getting ready for work. As I stood in the shower, my mind began to wander.
I don’t really understand how the thought process worked, but all of a sudden I thought to myself:
“Excuses are like donuts. They make you feel better momentarily, but in the long run, they just hinder you from reaching your goals.”
Maybe I was thinking about donuts, or maybe I had caught myself coming up with an excuse about something…I don’t know, but when I thought about it for awhile I realized how true that statement actually is!
Take a moment to put yourself in this situation: You’re in your local coffee shop, and behind the glass you see a puffy, buttery, sweet and savory donut that makes your mouth water - you make the purchase.
Instantly you feel satisfied. The taste is even better than you thought but350 calories and 52g of simple carbohydrates later, you feel like crap. The guilt begins to kick in and suddenly you begin to feel sluggish, unmotivated and sad.
So, how do you make yourself feel better? Well, for most people… it’s food. And, even if you don’t turn to food for comfort, you’ve just added about 2 hours of unplanned cardio to your day – if you even find the energy to do it.
Excuses, Excuses, Excuses!
So how is this similar to an excuse? Well, think about this:
You come home from work one day and you’re tired. You want nothing more in the world than to sit down on the couch, put your legs up and watch hours of family sitcoms on TV - but you can’t! You have a gym session scheduled for tonight that you know you should go to.
But then, you start to think about your day… “Well, today I worked really hard and I accomplished so much at work… I deserve a night to relax”.
So, you end up on the couch for the rest of the evening.
Initially, you feel satisfied. You got to relax and kick back for the night and it was wonderful.
But then the next day, when you come home from work you start thinking about the same thing. Maybe you had another hard day at work, or maybe you wanted to see next episode of American Idol, because last night’s was so good!
“One more night at home can’t hurt – besides, I’ve done so well this past month.”

Both scenarios make you feel ‘better’ instantly, but as time goes by they take on the ‘snowball effect’, and only make you feel worse – preventing you from reaching your goals.
Now, I’m not saying that every now and then you can’t indulge or relax. But, the difference between someone who always makes excuses, and someone who “takes a break here and there” or “indulges every now and then”, is that the latter has self control.
In the beginning of any weight loss journey, it is imperative that you recognize when you are making excuses for yourself – and then catch yourself!
Below are some of the common excuses used by people during a weight loss journey, and some words to help you snap out of it!
“I can’t workout today, I don’t have the energy”
If you get in the habit of using this excuse, you will soon NEVER have the energy. Essentially, you will have tricked yourself into believing that you are always too tired and sluggish.
Try pushing yourself to go to the gym anyways; usually it can acutally help re-energize you.
“I have no time to workout or plan meals. I have a busy schedule”
These days, everyone has a busy schedule. If you want this bad enough, you WILL find a way to fit it in. Don’t wait for life to “make time” for you – do it yourself.
Get up an hour earlier, use your lunch time at work to hit the gym, spend your Sunday mornings cooking meals, pack your lunch bag the night before – there is always a way to do it!
“My whole family is fat – trust me, I’ve tried everything”
Sorry to be blunt, but, you are just setting yourself up for failure.
Yes, granted, genetics does play a role in fitness – but only about 10%. What are you doing about the other 90%? If you are expecting fad diets, fancy ab crunch gizmos and disgusting diet beverages to solve your problems – think again!
If there was a quick fix for obesity, the entire world would look like they walked off of the cover of Oxygen. Losing weight takes hard work and dedication.
“Working out and eating healthy are too expensive. I don’t have the money to do that.”
Let me start by saying that if your health, longevity and wellness are not on your top priority list…you’ve got some serious thinking to do.
I’m sure, after making a couple of sacrifices – such as eating out for dinner – you can fit grocery shopping into your budget. As for gym memberships – shop around! There are some great deals, and you don’t have to get a personal trainer – do the research yourself.
Again, if you want it bad enough, you will make it work. Ever thought of eliminating cable TV and getting a gym membership?
“I’ve been working so hard for 4 weeks and I can hardly see a difference…I give up!”
Unfortunately, this is a common problem in our society today. We are so used to having things right away that anything that takes longer then a couple of days seems “too hard”.
Building your body and becoming the best person you can be takes time. It took you months, maybe years, to get fat…it will take you just as long – if not longer – to get fit.
“I’m too old to have a body like that. That’s what happens as you age.”
